Buying a carpet should be a long term investment. A carpet can add warmth, elegance and a touch of luxury to every room. It should last many years and be a source of comfort and pleasure. A great carpet should not only look amazing but should also be durable and hardwearing.
You should consider the location of the area you want to be carpeted. Is it going to be subjected to heavy use? Is there a possibility of spills and stains? Are children going to be using the room?
There are different options available for the material of your carpet. Each material has different qualities in terms of durability, comfort and price.
Wool
Wool is considered the premium carpet material and is priced accordingly. Wool is beautiful to look at and wonderful to touch. It has excellent crush resistance, which means that it can retain its shape and texture even after heavy pressure. However wool has less stain resistance than synthetic options, so it may not be suitable for children’s rooms or dining rooms. It is resistant to flames and will self-extinguish.
Wool is not advisable for areas exposed to moisture such as basement or stairways, where synthetics would be a better choice.
Synthetics
Synthetics can be a practical option. They are cheaper than wool and more resistant to stains and moisture.
Polypropylene is a very popular and inexpensive synthetic. It is resistant to stains and can be bleached if required. Cold liquid spills will not cause a problem. However the heat of hot drinks can bond the stain to the fibre.
Nylon is more expensive than polypropylene. It is stain resistant, although it should not be exposed to bleach. It is extremely durable, more so than polypropylene and even wool. However it remains soft to the touch. Nylon is the best choice for high traffic environments and is often used in commercial spaces for this reason.
All synthetics will melt if subjected to direct heat and flame, and if this is a possibility, wool would be a safer option.
Wool blend
A third option is to choose a carpet that incorporates a blend of wool and synthetics. Wool blend carpets combine the best features of wool and synthetics. An 80 per cent wool-blend carpet can be a practical and attractive choice combining the looks and feel of wool with the durability of synthetics.
Underlay
Unglamorous and often overlooked, a good underlay can significantly extend the life of our carpet. A good underlay will protect your carpet by cushioning it from wear and tear. It will reduce dents from heavy furniture and it will also insulate your room from heat and noise.
