How to keep your carpet looking great

Once you have bought your carpet you will want to keep it looking pristine for as long as possible. However, anyone who has purchased a new carpet will tell you that this is easier said than done!

The problem is that carpets can become dirty in so many ways, especially if you have kids and pets. Accidental soiling can cause your once beautiful carpet to lose its lustre very quickly.  However, you can keep your carpet clean using a variety of cleaning strategies and precautionary measures. Our quick guide to keeping your carpet looking great tells you what some of them are and how they can make your carpet look great for longer, and so, extending its useful life.

Here are our top tips on keeping your carpet looking great for as long as possible.

Deep Cleaning – Deep cleaning is the best way to tackle more serious soiling but most carpets will benefit from an annual deep clean. Deep cleaning machines use a combination of water and chemicals to provide a thorough and long lasting clean that actually washes deep into the fibres of your carpet. Cleaning machines can be hired, purchased or if you prefer you can employ the services of a carpet deep cleaning contractor.

Vacuuming – vacuuming is the most common way that people clean their carpet. The key to efficient vacuuming is to vacuum often. The longer you leave dirt and other contaminants the harder they will be to remove. Vacuuming 1 – 3 a week should be sufficient in most homes. For best results insure that your vacuum cleaner is emptied regularly, is functioning effectively and is well maintained to keep it in tip top condition.

Taking your shoes off – it is surprising what effect dirty and soiled footwear can have on a carpet. With good carpets there is no need to wear shoes indoors, so why do it? Removing shoes when entering the house is a little irritating if you are not used to it. However it is well worth the effort and before long moving footwear simply becomes habit

Tackle those stains – the best way to tackle stains and soiling is to deal with it right away. There are different procedures for dealing with different types of stains. Avoid the temptation to leave stains and soiling as this simply it makes them harder to remove. Instead learn the best ways of removing the different types of carpet stains and be prepared to use them as quickly as possible;

Replace doormats regularly – even the humble doormat has a part to play in keeping your carpet clean. So much carpet dirt and soiling comes from muddy footwear. Doormats are designed to remove dirt from footwear. The problem is that doormats can become worn and tired, and loose their effectiveness. It is for this reason that they need to be replaced regularly.
