When choosing flooring for your home, there are many considerations: looks, practicality, and ease of maintenance. One of the most important is: how long will your flooring last? Good quality flooring should withstand heavy use and give you pleasure for years to come. The flooring material is perhaps the most important factor in the lifespan of your floor.
Carpets
Carpets have an inviting, homely feel and can add warmth and character to any home. There are a number of factors that will influence the lifespan of your carpet. Most importantly: the number of people you live with, your lifestyle, and whether you have children or pets.
In an average household with 2-4 residents, the average carpet will last 3-5 years. After this point, carpets will generally start to show stains and the fibres will start to fray. Colours will fade with time and older carpet tend to look gray and lifeless. Children and pets will invariably increase the number of stains your carpet will receive. Pets also tend to chew carpet or scratch it with their claws
Real wood flooring
Real wood flooring is definitely a premium option, adding elegance and class to any home. It can be used for a clean modern look or an evocative traditional design. Real wood can scratch if subjected to high traffic. High heels and pets’ claws will definitely leave their mark. There is a wide range of densities available amongst different woods and the more dense varieties will be more durable.
Real wood can be vulnerable to water damage, but adverse effects will usually vanish once the water has had a chance to dry. The wonderful thing about real wood is that the boards can be re-sanded and refinished to remove blemishes. There is no need to replace a whole board.
Good quality hardwoods are very durable and can last as long as 100 years.
Laminate Flooring
Laminate flooring is designed to be low-maintenance and durable. It is a practical and affordable substitute for real wood that is often very close in appearance to the real thing. Modern laminates are constructed to resist impacts from dropped objects and scratches. They are coated with special finishes to resist staining.
If you have pets and boisterous children, laminate is actually a more practical alternative than real wood due to its resistance to surface damage. Another consideration is that damaged laminate planks can be easily removed and replaced.
Good quality laminates can last 20 – 50 years.
Vinyl
Vinyl flooring is very hard wearing and can deal with a dropped plate without a mark. Vinyl is also water resistant and hygienic, making it an ideal choice for kitchens and bathrooms. It is easy to maintain and stains can simply be mopped away.
Good quality vinyl can last 10 – 20 years.
